The anaesthetist Gerard Furlong graduated from St Bartholomew’s hospital in 1992 and went on to become a well known and respected figure in the world of anaesthesia. Doctor Gerard Furlong is a contributing member of several societies including DAS (Difficult Airways Society) and SCATA (Society for Computers And Technology in Anaesthesia).

Whilst at St Bartholomew’s Ged Furlong was a noted sportsman being a member of the rowing team, playing rugby for the veterans, representing the college skiing team as well as being an active and enthusiastic member of the sailing club.

Like many other medical students through the years Ged supported himself through college and university by working as an agency ancillary nurse. The long hours spent working as a nurse not only helped to pay his fees and rent but also helped to give Ged a wider and deeper understanding of what it takes to work in clinical practice. This was knowledge that was to be put to good use following his graduation when he started his career as an anaesthetist.

During his career as an anaesthetist Doctor Gerard Furlong has been a valued member of several hospitals in the UK including Coventry and Warwick hospital and Dunganon hospital in Northern Ireland. During his time at Dunganon hospital Ged worked in the Trauma ward and dealt with the casualties from several high profile incidents including the Tyban crossroads bombing and the shootings at Moy.

Presently Ged Furlong is retired from the frontline of medical practice and has a number of private business interests related to the medical industry. Ged is still a keen sportsman although he admits that his days of playing rugby are now behind him. these days he prefers to watch it on the telly instead of being at the bottom of a scrum on a wet and muddy rugby pitch.
